The Ecosystem Ecology Lab

Our lab is equipped to conduct key soil biogeochemistry analyses. The BMG Fluostar microplate reader quantifies nutrients (nitrate, ammonium, phosphate), dissolved organic carbon, DNA, and enzymatic activity—an important soil-health indicator. Automatic sieves help prepare samples and determine soil particle size, which influences nutrient retention, microbial communities, and root growth; wet sieving also measures aggregate stability. The pH meter assesses pH—crucial for soil activity and nutrient solubility—as well as conductivity, salinity, and ORP. Finally, Berlesse–Tullgren funnels allow the extraction of soil fauna such as collembolans, mites, and some nematodes, using a custom 24-lamp system for simultaneous processing. + info
