Vineyard

The experimental infrastructure “Andalusian Vineyards of the Future”, located within the boundaries of the Bahía de Cádiz Natural Park and linked to the Central Research Services “Salina La Esperanza” (SCISE), is dedicated to experimental research on the sustainable use of soils in vineyards and adjacent grassland areas through: (i) native plant cover crops, (ii) the use of animals for herbaceous vegetation control, and (iii) microbial communities. The “Andalusian Vineyards of the Future” platform aims to host a wide range of research projects in ecology, agroecology, and agri-food sciences within the University of Cádiz (UCA), and to serve as a hub for attracting economic and human resources through competitive funding calls. In addition, results generated by this experimental infrastructure will contribute to achieving the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly Goals 2 and 15, which focus on sustainably increasing agricultural productivity and on protecting, restoring, and promoting the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, halting and reversing land degradation, and stopping biodiversity loss. By promoting soil conservation and proper management—the largest global carbon reservoir—this project will also contribute to Goal 13, which aims to take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.
